Crystal Cove cottages evolved during the 1920's and 30's. Originally built by squatters taking advantage of the prime real estate. The land was originally owned by the Irvine Company and in 1940, they started a formal leasing system. The Irvine Company sold the property to California State Parks in 1979. Through the years the cottages were ignored and crumbled, but in 2001 a preservation plan was put into effect and the unique location was rescued. This image was taken before the preservation went into action, and was photographed with Infrared Film. The cottages now stand as the last intact example of early California beach architecture and are on the National Register of Historic Places.
